New Years Eve Makeup 2012!

Happy New Year’s Eve party preparations to all of you! We’ll be ringing in the New Year at A Twilight Masquerade at my dad’s place: Robert Hall Winery.

I want to look my best, and I want you to look your best, too – even if you’re not planning to go out for NYE! So, here are ten steps to flawless looking makeup:

1. Healthy Skin is the most important start to great makeup, and while you can’t change your skin in 24 hours, you can do the following:

  • Drink a ton of water the day of and the proceeding days. If you’ll be drinking, this is mandatory.
  • Eat healthy and regular meals the day of the bash.
  • Get plenty of rest the night before.

2. Cleanse A proper morning cleanse and evening cleanse are vital. The correct cleanser for your skin type is probably the most important decision you’ll make toward having the best skin possible.

3. Exfoliate – A few days before the big night, start using masks, peels, and scrubs. The Cleansing Oil is also an excellent way to polish, exfoliate, and brighten your skin: Do a 20-minute massage with it instead of the normal quick cleanse. (Did you know the Cleansing Oil takes off makeup really well? Buh-bye, makeup dissolver.)

Of course, hopefully you have consulted a skincare professional about which products are best for your skin. If you trust your exfoliant not to cause a breakout or irritate your skin, using one even the night before will help your skin look radiant.

My picks: Gyco-A GelCrystal C Serum and Peeling Cream.

4. Moisturize – Those of you who read my blog regularly know that when you discipline the skin, you also need to use plenty of TLC. Moisturize the entire face, neck, and décolleté, as well as the eye area. Even oily and acne-prone skin types need moisturizer. Your makeup will look so much better if your skin is well-hydrated.

My picks: Hy-DrateVitamin CreamChamomileEye Plus Cream, Lipo-Gen.

5. Prime – Every great artist knows that preparing the canvas is key. Getting the skin ready for the application of cosmetics makes the finished “look” so much better. Absorb Oil Control is perfect for oily and acne-prone skin: It is an oil controller and hydrator in one. Mineral Primer will fill in the fine lines and imperfections and make your foundation last. Use Concealer around the eye area or any other area where skin color is irregular.

6. Apply Foundation – Youngblood Mineral Makeup is my favorite makeup base. Use a small brush for extra coverage in the areas that need it. Use a darker color to contour, like the hollows of your cheeks or the sides of your nose. Contour the eyes with shades of brown, especially if you have droopy lids. (Remember: dark recedes, light brings forward.) Highlighter under the brow bone accentuates the arch. I carry BDB Duo Concealer: it’s a pencil with concealer on one end and highlighter on the other – another “twofer”!

7. Add Color – Glitter (small particles, used sparingly) is a hot look for NYE. Aging skin doesn’t do well with glitter, though. I personally like the Youngblood Mineral Makeup in the color Sunglow for sparkle and pop. Blush should be applied to the apple of the cheek only if you have a very thin and long face, so you can create width. If your face is round, apply blush on the cheek starting at the edge of the iris and swooping up to the temples and into the hairline.

Shadow color can be added next. Remember: if you are playing up the eyes, go easy on the lips, and vice versa. Youngblood Mineral Eyeshadow is amazing – long-lasting and smudge-proof.

Eyeliner (MUA Michelle Phan gives some options), is probably the biggest statement in makeup. Youngblood Pencils with Rhus Succedanea Fruit Wax and Coco- Glycerides is so easy to use. If your lids are crepey/droopy you may not be able to rock the winged effect on the upper lid but try this:

Stretch the edge of the eye so the skin is taught (be careful not to pull too tight, it can damage the delicate eye area), then line the lower lid very close to the lashes and wing it up and out!

8. Lashes – Lash Extensions in a tube! Blackout Mineral Mascara by Youngblood is great.  It has little fibers, and is thickening and lengthening.  Lash Primer, underwear for the lashes. 🙂 is also excellent for extra volume and conditioning. For those of us who need to curl our lashes, I like the MAC curler best.

9. Lips – I recommend a lip pencil and plumping colored gloss – both by Youngblood Mineral Cosmetics. You’ll get rich, highly pigmented color with the pencil and hydration with the gloss.

10. Eyebrows – Getting the right shape requires professional help – at least to get you started and at best for maintenance. You’re not stuck with the eyebrows you have: You can create the perfect brows at home.  How? If you have thinning brows, start using Brow Boost right away. All the Billion Dollar Brows products rock! Cosmetics for creating the perfect eyebrows – like pencils, powders, and brow-setting gel – will transform blah brows into bomb brows!

Have a great time, and Happy New Year to you all!

See you at the spa!

Peel & Heal Duo – October Product Feature 2011

This month’s Product Feature is the dynamic duo of Glyco-A Gel and Hy-Drate. They are perfectly matched to provide a gentle yet effective glycolic exfoliation and a powerful moisture-retaining healing treatment.

Fall is the best time of year to “peel” the skin because the sun’s rays aren’t as strong, daylight hours are shorter, and we’re outside less. And your skin will be radiant for the Holidays!

The Perfect Peel

Tu’eL Glyco-A Gel is a glycolic acid gel (AHA) for gentle surface exfoliation of all skin types. It smooths the skin’s surface, helps reduce the appearance of fine lines, lightens dark spots, and increases product absorption. It is also used for oily and acne-prone skin types.

Key Ingredients: Glycolic Acid 10% (a sugar cane-derived alpha hydroxy acid that exfoliates the skin), Aloe Vera Extract (soothes and protects), Panthenol (binds surface moisture, reducing skin irritation and increasing elasticity)

How to Use: Apply Glyco-A Gel in the evening 3-5 times per week in a thin layer to the face, neck, and décolleté (avoiding the eye area). Always follow with Hy-Drate.

Essential Under-wear!

Tu’eL Hy-Drate is the best moisture gel available and should be the first thing that touches your skin both morning and night. This lightweight liquid gel increases surface moisture retention and provides benefits for all skin types.  The keys to beautiful, healthy skin are water and moisture retention.

Key Ingredients: Sodium Hyaluronate (provides superior hydration), Sodium PCA (builds skin moisture content), Dimethicone Copolyol (holds moisture on skin), Green Tea Extract (a soothing, calming antioxidant)

Sodium Hyaluronate is the primary active ingredient. Because of its light molecular weight, it penetrates and is absorbed into the skin easily. This humectant holds more than 1,000 times its own weight in water, which plumps and firms the skin.

How to Use: For daily use, apply a dime-sized amount to face (including eye area), neck, and décolleté. Smooth in with a few drops of water. Use under creams and sun protection. Hy-Drate should be used twice daily.

October Product Feature 2010

I am so excited to bring you this month’s special Product Feature. (It’s a 2-fer!)  Tu’el’s Cleansing Oils and Herbalizers and the new Travel Pack, which includes the Tu’el cleansing system for A.M. and P.M.,  Hy-Drate,  (both in 1 oz. bottles), a sample of Peeling Cream and a sample of the appropriate evening moisturizer for your skin-type.

These products are a delight to use  because they bring “spa” home to you. I don’t choose to carry products at Star Brows on performance alone. I want to use skincare that inspires me, works, is as close to “natural” as possible, is a good value and is enjoyable to use.

Taking care of your skin is sometimes perceived as drudgery, but personal care can be renewing. It’s simply a matter of perspective. If you are in the former camp, are you open to thinking about skincare in a new way?

Last month we launched Star Brow’s Rewards and I couldn’t keep September’s feature, Youngblood’s Pressed Mineral Compacts, on the shelves! I ended up happily doing  rain checks!

I’m so glad you’re all enjoying the new Rewards perks.  I appreciate all of you!

The beautiful model in this picture is a friend and client,  Amanda De Bello. She brings the customer testimonial for this month’s feature:

“Linda was kind enough to answer many of my questions by simply “trying out” Tu’el products on my face, which ended in a purchase I do not regret.  The Cleansing Oil is such a relief to my skin (it even gently removes makeup!) & I can feel my face literally getting softer each day I use it.  The Herbalizer is like nothing I’ve ever tried before; my skin seems to “drink it up” and the herbs smell so good! I have been known to spend money on high quality, big name products, and honestly just wasn’t getting the results I was happy with. What I realized is that previously I was willing to spend whatever it took to “fix” what damage was done to my skin–and now I am on a preventive path to consistent care and nurturing my skin daily with the entire Tu’el cleansing system. Thank you Star Brows!”

The Product Feature(s) of the month give you Double Rewards. The Cleansing Oil and Herbalizer are each in 4 oz sizes and are $50 for the set. The Travel Pack (seen right)  is $48. That’s $5 in Star Brows Rewards regularly, but ($10 this month).  And who doesn’t love FREE spa services?

And as dear old dad says, “I didn’t just save $10, I MADE $10!”

As many of you know, I won an award for a new treatment called Star Massage which utilizes the Tu’el Hydrophilic Cleansing Oil System.  This link will take you to the YouTube I produced–as well as to Tu’el’s founder Lori Nestori’s YouTube–on the Oil and Herbalizer cleansing system.

See you at the spa!

The 5 Worst Skin Care Mistakes – Part 2 National Skin Care Awareness Month

Caring for your skin is a lifetime pursuit, and it’s never too early to start. In honor of  National Skin Care Awareness Month (NSCAM) – I’d like to offer 50% off the Express Facial for your daughters or sons – 18 years old or younger, during the month of September.

Inspired by NSCAM here is Part #2 of a 3 part post about; skincare myths, truths, mistakes and tips to help you care the largest organ of your body – your skin!

THE FIVE WORST SKIN CARE MISTAKES

SKIN MISTAKE #1- USING SOAP TO WASH YOUR FACE.

If you wash your skin with bar soap (no matter how much you paid for it), you strip your skin of all its water, which instantly creates dead skin cell buildup. After that, you have to quickly put moisturizer on to put back exactly what you just took out—makes no sense!  The binders that hold a bar soap together have a high pH balance, making it too drying for most skin types. But they also reverse the benefits from any exfoliants that you’re using, since those are intended to remove dry skin cells. Instead, in the morning use gel based cleansers for oily skin or milky – creamy cleansers for dry skin and Tu’el water loving oil and herbalizer cleansing system for the evening.

SKIN MISTAKE #2- USING HARSH PRODUCTS TO CONTROL OIL.

When it comes to skin care products for oily skin, many skin care companies focus on products that simply remove the oil by using strong, harsh and dehydrating ingredients. While it will give you an immediate ‘tight’ feeling, it then creates a backlash hours later with an increase in oil production.
The amount of oil your skin produces is tied to the hydration levels in your skin. Oily skins don’t need additional oil (which is why oil-free moisturizers like Hy-Drate are suggested) but you still need water in the skin. When the skin doesn’t have the water it needs, the skin attempts to balance itself by producing more oil (by stimulating the nerve endings) to compensate for the lack of water. To lessen oil, choose gentle, sulfate-free, low-foaming cleansers, avoid alcohol-based toners and always use moisturizer.

SKIN MISTAKE #3- NOT USING TONER AFTER EVERY WASHING.

Toners are misunderstood. Most people aren’t really sure what they do and they often don’t use them because the alcohol found in most, is irritating. Toners without alcohol are a perfect way to give your skin the water and hydration it so desperately needs. Your skin cells are like fish, they need water to live – without water they die prematurely resulting in unhealthy skin—not to mention dry skin cells. Use an alcohol-free toner every time you wash, make sure to leave it damp before applying your serum or moisturizer to seal in the hydration. Try Senegece Climate Control.

SKIN MISTAKE #4- OVER-EXFOLIATING .

Exfoliation is extremely beneficial to the skin; it reduces clogged pores, blackheads and breakouts, removes surface dry skin cells and  softens the appearance of fine lines, making large pores appear less noticeable and encouraging new, healthy skin cell growth. But when it comes to exfoliation, less is more – work smarter, not harder. If you use facial scrubs, acids, enzymes and get professional chemical peel treatments too often, you can damage the health of the skin. By over-exfoliating, you thin the skin and damage the natural protective barrier which can accelerate aging and chronic, prolonged inflammation. Chemical exfoliation (acids) and physical exfoliation (scrubs) should never be over used and TLC must always be used in equal measure in the form of moisturizers, toners, serums and  calming – soothing masks.

At Star Brows, every time you come in for a service I look at your skin and make professional recommendations. The skin is always changing – so how you care for it must also change.

SKIN MISTAKE #5- PICKING AT YOUR SKIN.

Getting blemishes is a fact of life that can occur well into adulthood. While there are many things you can do to prevent them, it’s really important to treat them properly once they appear—and this is where many people lack knowledge. For the most part, a blemish will only last 5-7 days, but a post-breakout red or dark scar from picking at a blemish can last for months – sometimes a lifetime. The only time you should extract a blemish is when a visible whitehead has come to the surface of the skin. This infection needs to get out, so you can gently remove it. But if you pick at something that is deep under the skin, you’ll only make it worse—and an oozing scab is a lot more difficult to cover with makeup than a closed bump! Tu’el Clear-It is great for spot treating, as well as caring for post wax skin bumps.

Best Facial Moisturizer Ingredient

blogWe all want gorgeous skin right? Read on, you’ll be glad you did ;).

The most important ingredient in a moisturizer is an ingredient known as: hyalurnan, sodium hyaluronate or hyaluronic acid (HA). This is a natural substance which is found in all living organisms and is the main component of the connective tissue in the human body.

Our favorite product with this ingrediant is Hydrate XS 1000. 🙂

HA can hold moisture at 1,000 times its molecular weight, which is more than any other natural substance.

HA is involved in tissue repair. When skin is excessively exposed to UVB rays, it becomes inflamed, causing sunburn. The cells in the dermis stop producing as much HA, and increase the rate of its degradation. Topical use helps hydrate the skin and reduces fine lines and wrinkles.

Oily skin benefits from this substance as well, as the skin may be “water dry” and have some compromised barrier integrity or imbalance.

Watch labels to make sure your moisturizer contains it. It is great for all skin types, and as I like to call it “underwear”  because it goes on under sun protectant during the day, and under serums, creams and other preparations at night.

A sister product to Hydrate XS 1000 is Triple Splash

It hydrates, tones and improves skin elasticity, they are both by Tu’el. This company was founded by Eva Friederichs who is one of the founding mothers of the professional skincare industry. Hydrate XS 1000 has been a #1 seller for 20 years with this company – long before it was discovered by consumers or even skincare industry professionals. Here is what Lori, daughter of Eva Friederichs,  and president of Eva’s Esthetics today, has to say:

My favorite product

“I love this particular body product!!! Yes, three exclamations.  Why do I love it so much?  Absolutely, nothing comes close to how it makes my skin feel when I use it UNDER my body lotion.  This may seem like too many things to put on, but we skin techie’s get quite skilled at layering.  The interesting part is that the active ingredient is Sodium Hyaluronate which is the same ingredient in Hydrate XS 1000.

Another thing I really like is that since it is in a water base I can add my pure essential oil to it (about 5 drops to the 8 ounce bottle) and this essential oil becomes my very own perfume. Because it is a water solution the best way to apply it is directly after your shower.  Get out, towel dry and apply the Triple Splash.  Be sure to do all parts like the undersides of your arms into your arm pits, which is an area that especially shows dehydration or age.  Pump some into one hand and just bring it over to the area you are applying and rub in.  Do your entire body and then layer your body lotion directly over that.  No need to let it dry.  You will actually use less body lotion.

I travel a lot which is really hard on the skin and so dehydrating. I promise you, this is one item I never leave home without.”
