High Frequency Facials

New at Star Brows! Star Brows Fashion Shoot resized-199

Recently we purchased a new skincare-treatment machine that has the capability to perform multiple functions. While we focus primarily on European-style facials (relaxing, hands-on, rather than machine-oriented), we value results too! Below is an explanation of some of the features and benefits you’ll experience during your next facial.

High frequency treatments are a safe, gentle, non-invasive means to achieve acne clarification and skin rejuvenation.  The gentle oscillating, oxygenating power of low level electrical current has been shown to enhance circulation, increase collagen and elastin production, eliminate toxins and acne-causing bacteria, encourage lymphatic drainage, exfoliate dead skin cells, and assist with improved skincare product performance and absorption.

High frequency current stimulation forces an infusion of enriched oxygen molecules into the skin, thus cleansing, massaging, stimulating blood flow, dilating superficial blood vessels, re-texturizing, and increasing lymphatic drainage. This results in an improvement in blood circulation and cell renewal.  Increased production levels of collagen and elastin soften and smooth away wrinkles, reduce pore size, improve overall skin texture,  and promote a pleasant sense of well-being.

The use of low level electrical current also promotes a cleansing, antibacterial action that helps eliminate and prevent the onset of acne.  The skin is left feeling energized, rosy, firm, refreshed, and noticeably softer – even after just one treatment.  The enriched oxygen molecules produced by the high frequency machine are safe and are also effective in treating almost any skin lesion from acne to scars.

Benefits:

  • Gentle, non-invasive resurfacing procedure
  • Effective treatment for acne, enlarged pores, and scarring
  • Consistent treatments can provide a lasting long-term, healthy-aging alternative to reduce fine lines, wrinkles, and sagging skin

The following precautions should be taken:

1. Avoid using AHA or BHA products and unprotected sun exposure at least three days before and after your treatment.

2. Do not schedule a high frequency facial if any of the following are present: pregnancy, cuts and abrasions, diabetes, heart disease or pacemaker, metal pins or plates, dental braces, sunburn, phlebitis or thrombosis, vascular conditions, or any other condition for which you are under a physician’s care.

Essential Oils – September Product Feature 2012

This month’s Product Features are OSEA and Tu’el essential oils. As anyone who has had a service at Star Brows knows, we use essential oils in every single service we do! They are truly essential to the spa experience, and I believe irreplaceable in a personal-care routine.

An essential oil is a concentrated hydrophobic liquid containing volatile aromatic compounds from plants. My favorite application is for the facial skin, and there is one for every skin type and condition.

The oils have many benefits, and each oil has different attributes. Our collection is targeted to skin types, but they are also relaxing, detoxifying, sleep-inducing, and generally tonic for the entire body. Once applied to the facial skin, they actually enter the bloodstream and go to work throughout the body.

The Tu’el lineup of essential oil synergy blends for each skin type are explained in detail here. New to our family of essential oils are the OSEA blends:

Essential Corrective Complex is a pure blend of essential oils that create a disinfecting, absorbent treatment to rapidly heal blemishes.

Essential Hydrating Oil is a 30% blend of pure essential oils that provides deep hydration, working to reduce the appearance of fine lines.

If you’re new to Star Brows, you may not know about the Product Feature or Rewards yet. To put it simply, 10% of all your product purchases, all the time, go toward free service Enhancements, like Raindrop Therapy, Lash Tint, Chemical Peels, or Star Massage.

When a product is the Monthly Feature, however, you’ll get 20% back in Rewards! Oils range in price from $28-$31, with Rewards points totaling $6. Prices quoted may not be valid after September 2012.

Cleansing Oil and Herbalizer – May Product Feature 2012

Tu’el Cleansing Oil and Herbalizer by Eva’s Esthetics  is my favorite way to cleanse the skin. It is like having an at-home  spa experience every night. This innovative two-step cleansing system features natural elements like fresh smelling mandarin oil, calming chamomile extract, healing extracts of arnica, and purifying grapefruit extract. You can experience it all in the Mother’s Day Special Offer this month!

Nothing cleans the skin like hydrophilic oil. Oil cleansers balance your skin and prepare it for exfoliation, hydration, absorption of nutrients, and protection.

As skin cells die, they lose moisture, flatten, and migrate to the skin’s surface. The face excretes a very sticky substance known as sebum that bonds to dead skin cells. In order for these cells to be released, this oily sebum must be dissolved.

When hydrophilic oil is massaged into the skin, it bonds with the sebum and releases the dead cells. This release of the dead layer of skin achieves exceptional pore cleansing and decongestion and a more refined skin appearance. Adding the correct Herbalizer, a sugar-based extract with essential oils, creates a custom cleansing system. This unique method balances the skin and eliminates the need for astringents or toners.

There are four custom formulations of Cleansers and five Herbalizers based on this cleansing system to ensure that, regardless of your skin type – dry, combination, oily, impure, or reactive – your skin will feel the profound difference of cleansing with Tu’eL.

The Cleansing Oil ($28) and Herbalizer ($23) duo are  $51 with $10 in Rewards.

Essential Oil Synergy Blends

I have been using essential oils at home as medicine since I had my first baby (30 years ago)!

So, when I started my first skincare business, I fell in love with Eva’s Esthetics Essential Oil Blends and the company, many of whose products are plant-based.

As anyone who has had a service with me knows, I use essential oils in every single service I do.

Until now however, these proprietary blends have only been available to you by special order. I’m proud to announce that they are now in the product line-up at Star Brows!

What is an essential oil?

Essential Oils are made primarily of terpenoid compounds, which are volatile and can be readily absorbed through penetration, inhalation, and skin permeation. These oils are stored in the outer part of the plant so when you “crack” the skin of an orange the smell is released, or when you break an aloe plant leaf the serum oozes. Essential Oils are volatile, evaporating when exposed to air.

Essential Oils help to protect the skin barrier function and also retain moisture, regulate capillaries, eliminate waste matter and dead cells, promote regeneration, and tone skin cells.

Eva’s Esthetics Synergy Blends complement each skin type within each line and are formulated to achieve a specific therapeutic result. The retail size is 15% pure essential oil. ½ oz.

Vitamin Essential Oil: Formulated for dry, small-pored skin.

What’s in it? Lavender, Bergamot, Mint, Rose, Rose Geranium, Rosemary, Grape Seed Oil

Azulene Essential Oil: Formulated for combination to oily, large-pored skin.

What’s in it? Lavender, German Chamomile, Bergamot, Cypress, Eucalyptus Radiata, Lemon Grass, Palma Rosa, Ylang Ylang, Grape Seed Oil

Purifying Essential Oil: Formulated for acne-prone skin with any size pore.

What’s in it? Spike Lavender, Bergamot, Tea Tree, Rose Geranium, Lemon, Atlas Cedar, Palma Rosa, Grape Seed Oil

Chamomile Essential Oil: For dry, small-pored skin that is “product sensitive”.

What’s in it? Lavender, Rose Geranium, Roman Chamomile, Copal, Frankincense, Helichrysum, Grape Seed Oil

Regenerative Essential Oil: For mature skin of any type or pore size.

What’s in it? Cypress, Rosewood, Carrot Seed, Marjoram, Vetiver, Lavender, Apricot, and Avocado Oil

The results you’ll get from using these oils at home will amaze you, and I know you will love them as much as I do.

Power Peel and C-Power

Is your skin feeling tired, dull, and out of balance? Winter is the best time of year to work on your complexion: UV rays are low, you’re outside less, and if you’re like me – because of the long nights – you are resting more.

I’ve chosen two exfoliating products by Tu’el to Feature. They both contain Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHAs) and provide amazing results when used together:

Power Peel is a 10% Glycolic Acid solution which improves the skin’s appearance and texture. It helps reduce wrinkles, acne scarring, and hyper-pigmentation and improves many other skin conditions.  AHAs weaken the binding properties of the lipids that hold the dead skin cells together, allowing the skin to be exfoliated, exposing live skin cells, and stimulating new cell growth.

C Power is a healthy-aging and antioxidant Vitamin C serum that acts as a free radical scavenger, helps reverse and prevent sun damage, and improves skin firmness.

Made with the only stable form of Vitamin C, along with Lactic and Malic Acids, this fabulous serum will change your skin! Vitamin C  is great to use under your sun block for natural extra protection as well.

What’s in C Power?

Purified Water, Lactic Acid, Citric Acid, Malic Acid, Green Tea Extract, Dimethyl Isosorbide, Magnesium Ascorbyl Phosphate, Hydroxyethylcellose, Propylene Glycol, Superoxide Dismutase, Panthenol, Sodium Hyaluronate, L-Tyrosine, Sodium Citrate, Tetrasodium EDTA, Phenoxyethanol, Potassium Sorbate. 1 oz.

Travel Packs by Tu’el

Travel Packs

This is the perfect travel companion, as well as a great way to try Tu’el.  It includes the A.M. (Gel or Milk Cleanser) and P.M. (Cleansing Oil and Herbalizer) cleansing systems as well our beloved

Hy-Drate in 1 oz. bottles.

Note: I refill these convenient travel sizes with my larger sized products to take to the gym.

Packaged for Dry, Combination, Oily, Impure and Dry-Reactive skin types as determined by your pore size (don’t count the nose!):

Vitamin Line
Dry Skin

This skin type is primarily characterized by small pores, is not product sensitive, lacks the ability to produce sebaceous oil and easily becomes dehydrated. It may have underlying congestion and may also be flaky. The Vitamin Family hydrates the skin, stimulates sebaceous oil production and seals in moisture. The moderately rich Vitamin Cream, Vitamin Essential Oil and the rich creamy Vitamin Hydrating Mask, adds needed nutrients to the skin, completing the cleansing system for treatments in the spa and for home care.

Azulene Line
Combination and Oily Skin

This skin type shows two different textures covering 1/3 to 1/2 of the face, and appears to have medium to large pores. It may be congested and dehydrated due to improper home care. It needs balancing of oil production without dehydration. The Azulene Family balances sebaceous oil production, hydrates and calms. For those with combination and oily skin and are also product-reactive, Azulene is a suitable ingredient for calming. Special ingredients in the Azulene Essential Oil and the Balancing Clay Mask complete the line.

Purifying Line
Impure Skin

Impure skin can be dry, combination or oily, and any age with visible and constant breakouts. Many times this skin is extremely dehydrated and irritated due to improper care or harsh ingredients. Home care and professional treatments along with diet counseling are an absolute necessity. The Purifying Family acts as a germicide to target impurities while keeping skin feeling and looking great. The Purifying Clay Mask and Purifying Essential Oil complete the line and are additional solutions to treat impure skin.

Chamomile Line
Dry-Reactive Skin

This skin has some of the same properties as dry skin – small pores, possibly congested, easily dehydrated and irritated and also reacts to products. This is the client that says, “Everything I use makes me breakout.” The Chamomile Line calms while gently improving, maintaining and enhancing the skin. The active ingredients in Chamomile Essential Oil and Chamomile Cream continue to calm and soothe.

Regenerative Line
Mature Skin

Mature skin is dry, combination, oily or dry-reactive that has aged. Tanned skin at any age is considered mature. Mature skin with impurities will use the Purifying Line. The Regenerative Line stimulates cell production, hydrates, nourishes and firms. To use this line, first analyze the skin, choose the appropriate cleansing line and then add Herbalizer from the Regenerative Line. Special nutrients from the Regeneration Cream, Regenerative Firming Mask, Regenerative Essential Oil and Glorious Gold™ Eye & Lip Gel are perfect additions to treat aging skin.

Glorious Gold Eye and Lip Gel

Tu’el’s Glorious Gold™ Eye & Lip Gel by Eva’s Esthetics

This is a light fragrance-free gel that diminishes dark circles, improves circulation, moisturizes, and reduces wrinkles around the eyes and lips. The Bearberry, Licorice and Blackberry are natural lighteners, so you can also spot-treat your age or sun spots.

Glorious Gold is formulated for aging skin, I suggest Eye Plus if you are under 30. 😉 Which ever product you choose, you NEED to use something special for the delicate skin around the eyes.
I suggest Hy-Drate first (maybe instead of “underwear” we should call this a “foundational garment”) lol, apply this as close to the eye as you feel comfortable, then Glorious Gold or Eye Plus Lotion.
What’s in it?
Purified Water, Glycerin, Arbutin, Wild Thyme Extract, Lupin Extract, Bearberry Extract, Blackberry Extract, Licorice Extract, Ginko Biloba Extract, Chamomile Extract, Hydrolyzed Wheat Protein, Hyaluronic Acid, Tocopherol Acetate (Vitamin E), Polysorbate 20, Carbomer, Triethanolamine, Propylene Glycol, Phenoxyethanol, Potassium Sorbate. 1oz. $80

Going to the Beach? Tips to Save Your Skin

It’s a fact: The Ocean is one big sun reflector. You’re more at risk for sunburns and sun damage on the shore than anywhere else.

Here are my expert tips to keep your skin safe this summer:

  • Discontinue use of AHA’s:Using exfoliants regularly (such as Glycolic Acid) have been shown to increase sun sensitivity by 45 percent. It’s best to discontinue use of AHA’s seven days prior to the beach.
  • Sunscreen: It’s not the SPF number that is as important, it is how often and generously you apply.  When it comes to SPF, I prefer SPF 30 reapplied as often as every hour.

My pick: Tu’el Oil Free Protection SPF 30. It’s an oil-free, lightweight full spectrum sun block for oily or impure skin or for those in hot and/or humid climates.

It contains a key moisturizing ingredient, Sodium Hyaluronate as well as nourishing Cucumber Extract, Calendula Extract, Chamomile Extract, Green Tea
  • Be aware of oily skinned areas: The areas of your face where you have larger pores will always produce more oils.  These natural oils can breakdown sunscreens more quickly, so pay attention and reapply more often.  For example, the nose area acts as a natural reflectant.  Pay attention to your nose, or any area, that is getting shiny…
  • Apply sunscreen in forgotten areas: hairline, ears, tops of feet, toes, eyelids.
  • Don’t think you are safe in the shade: You still get sun under an umbrella, especially by the ocean. Because the water reflects light you still need to apply and re-apply sunscreen.
  • Wear a hat and sunglasses: If the goal is to help protect your skin from premature aging, a hat and sunglasses can be the extra coverage you need for your face.
  • Got acne? Go for a swim: The salt in the ocean water helps destroy bacteria, which can clear up your breakouts.
  • Rinse off the saltwater: The same water that is destroying bacteria is also very dehydrated (great for blemishes, not for dry skin). Make sure to rinse off before leaving beach.
  • Wear mineral makeup: For extra protection, Youngblood mineral powders has an SPF protecting factor and will give you a finished look without being too heavy for the beach.

What if you applied sunscreen but still got sunburn? The most common problems are:

  • Too little sunscreen applied
  • Not applied every hour for intense exposure
  • Not the right formulation

Sunscreens wear off, sweat off and wash off.  Applying 20 minutes before exposure, liberally and often makes all the difference.  If you want to look young, avoid the sun. A little sun means a little damage; a lot of sun means a lot of damage.

Summer means fun at the beach – relax and enjoy but be safe with your skin!
