The Cover of Skin Deep Magazine!

It is so awesome to be a published author! You can read the digital edition if you’re interested: just click on the cover. This is my third time out, and my story is the lead article. ūüôā Since I no longer have employees (or children at home!), I’ve needed a teaching outlet, and writing fills the bill perfectly.

Since the article was published, I’ve gotten some great feedback, along with a request to teach at the Santa Barbara Aesthetics Academy.

Of course, I need to give credit where credit is due. My mom is a writer. She has yet to be published but has written several novels. She is brilliant. Trained as a lawyer and schooled in psychology as well, she was definitely my first mentor.

Next comes Jenn Prentice, whom you know.  She worked with me when I first began blogging, and she writes the hilarious and awesome blog, The Style Geek. She has guest-blogged for Star Brows and has written one of my most popular posts: Youngblood Mineral Mascara РThe difference is eye-catching. This lady has inspired and influenced me more than she knows.

Then there’s my bestie, Jeanne Dininni. She is a copywriter, writes the blog Writer’s Notes, ¬†and edits everything I write (so, if there are mistakes…just sayin’). ūüėČ I hate(d)¬†grammar¬†and punctuation. She tries to slip in teaching moments, which I rebel against¬†regularly. After all, why should I learn when I have her ‚Äď ha!

No thank-you list of mine would be complete without a shout-out to the Lord! He inspires, sustains, and teaches me new things daily: most importantly the lesson of Eucharisteo. And my daughter Valery’s ¬†father-in-law, Larry Hoekman, who writes GodToMe, my daily devotional, inspires me as well.

All this to say, “Don’t let your gifts lie dormant. Take a chance, step out of your comfort zone, and live each day to the fullest, breath to breath.” ¬†Cheers! Here’s to success¬†for all of us in 2012.

See you at the spa!

New Years Eve Makeup 2012!

Happy New Year’s Eve party¬†preparations¬†to all of you!¬†We‚Äôll be ringing in the New Year at A Twilight Masquerade at my dad’s place: Robert Hall Winery.

I want to look my best, and I want you to look your best, too ‚Äď even if you’re not planning to go out for NYE! So, here are ten steps to flawless looking makeup:

1. Healthy Skin is the most important start to great makeup, and while you can’t change your skin in 24 hours, you can do the following:

  • Drink a ton of water the day of and the proceeding days. If you‚Äôll be drinking, this is mandatory.
  • Eat healthy and regular meals the day of the bash.
  • Get plenty of rest the night before.

2. Cleanse ‚Äď A proper morning cleanse and evening cleanse are vital. The correct cleanser for your skin type is probably the most important decision you’ll make toward having the best skin possible.

3.¬†Exfoliate¬†‚Äď A few days before the big night, start using masks, peels, and scrubs. The¬†Cleansing Oil¬†is also an excellent way to polish, exfoliate, and brighten your skin: Do a 20-minute massage with it instead of the normal quick cleanse. (Did you know the Cleansing Oil takes off makeup really well? Buh-bye, makeup dissolver.)

Of course, hopefully you have consulted a skincare professional about which products are best for your skin. If you trust your exfoliant not to cause a breakout or irritate your skin, using one even the night before will help your skin look radiant.

My picks: Gyco-A Gel, Crystal C Serum and Peeling Cream.

4.¬†Moisturize¬†‚Äď Those of you who read my blog regularly know that when you discipline the skin, you also need to use plenty of TLC. Moisturize the entire face, neck, and d√©collet√©, as well as the eye area. Even oily and acne-prone skin types need moisturizer. Your makeup will look so much better if your skin is well-hydrated.

My picks: Hy-Drate, Vitamin Cream, Chamomile, Eye Plus Cream, Lipo-Gen.

5.¬†Prime¬†‚ÄstEvery great artist knows that preparing the canvas is key. Getting the skin ready for the application of cosmetics makes the finished “look” so much better.¬†Absorb Oil Control¬†is perfect for oily and acne-prone skin: It is an oil controller and hydrator in one.¬†Mineral Primer¬†will fill in the fine lines and imperfections and make your foundation last. Use¬†Concealer¬†around the eye area or any other area where skin color is irregular.

6. Apply Foundation¬†‚Äď Youngblood¬†Mineral Makeup¬†is my favorite makeup base. Use a small brush for extra coverage in the areas that need it. Use a darker color to contour, like the hollows of your cheeks or the sides of your nose. Contour the eyes with shades of brown, especially if you have droopy lids. (Remember: dark recedes, light brings forward.) Highlighter under the brow bone accentuates the arch. I carry¬†BDB Duo¬†Concealer:¬†it’s a pencil with concealer on one end and highlighter on the other ‚Äď another “twofer”!

7. Add Color¬†‚Äď Glitter (small particles, used sparingly) is a hot look for NYE. Aging skin doesn’t do well with glitter, though. I¬†personally¬†like the Youngblood Mineral Makeup in the color¬†Sunglow¬†for sparkle and pop.¬†Blush should be applied to the apple of the cheek only if you have a very thin and long face, so you can create width. If your face is round, apply blush on the cheek starting at the edge of the iris and swooping up to the temples and into the hairline.

Shadow color can be added next. Remember: if you are playing up the eyes, go easy on the lips, and vice versa. Youngblood Mineral Eyeshadow is amazing ‚Äď long-lasting and smudge-proof.

Eyeliner (MUA Michelle Phan gives some options), is probably the biggest statement in makeup. Youngblood Pencils with Rhus Succedanea Fruit Wax and Coco- Glycerides is so easy to use. If your lids are crepey/droopy you may not be able to rock the winged effect on the upper lid but try this:

Stretch the edge of the eye so the skin is taught (be careful not to pull too tight, it can damage the delicate eye area), then line the lower lid very close to the lashes and wing it up and out!

8.¬†Lashes ‚Äď Lash Extensions in a tube!¬†Blackout Mineral Mascara¬†by Youngblood is great. ¬†It has little fibers, and is thickening and¬†lengthening. ¬†Lash Primer,¬†underwear¬†for the lashes. ūüôā¬†is also excellent for extra volume and conditioning. For those of us who need to curl our lashes, I like the MAC curler best.

9. Lips¬†‚ÄstI recommend a lip pencil and plumping colored gloss ‚Äď both by Youngblood Mineral Cosmetics. You’ll get rich, highly pigmented color with the pencil and hydration with the gloss.

10.¬†Eyebrows¬†‚Äď Getting the right shape requires¬†professional help¬†‚Ästat least to get you started and at best for¬†maintenance. You’re not stuck with the eyebrows you have: You can create the perfect brows at home. ¬†How? If you have thinning brows, start using¬†Brow Boost¬†right away.¬†All the¬†Billion Dollar Brows¬†products rock!¬†Cosmetics for creating the perfect eyebrows ‚Äď like pencils, powders, and brow-setting gel ‚Äď will transform¬†blah¬†brows into¬†bomb¬†brows!

Have a great time, and Happy New Year to you all!

Star Brows of the Week – Emma Roberts

Emma Roberts, daughter of Eric and niece of Julia, is my pic for Star Brow this week.

Blond brows are so pretty, and I love the natural, rather flat shape her brow has. Sometimes the standard arch, so¬†commonly¬†requested, just¬†doesn’t¬†work. ¬†I like to bring out each individual’s natural brow shape, and work with it rather than forcing a certain shape onto it.

Emma’s lashes are, of course, the statement here. Get the best lashes ever with¬†Mineral Lash Prime and¬†Outrageous Lashes Mineral Lengthening Mascara.

Her lashes are most likely enhanced by eyelash extensions. I’ve considered offering those again, but they are so tedious and expensive to keep up. You have to do “fills,” like with acrylic nails, when your natural lash sheds¬†noticeably. Each extension is glued to each natural lash. A full set takes at least 90 minutes to apply. Anyone doing them in less time may be applying lash clusters, which just don’t last. When a clump falls off, there is a big gap, versus losing one random lash at a time.

Outrageous Lashes Kit ‚Äď September Product Features 2011

Gorgeous and Healthy Lashes

Youngblood Mineral Cosmetics makes two fabulous products for eyelashes and they are this month’s Product Features! Beautiful lashes need to be cared for, and these mineral and vitamin-rich formulas do just that.

Mineral Lash Prime –¬†This milky white lash ‚Äúcream‚ÄĚ works under mascara to create visibly fuller and thicker lashes after the first coat of mascara. The nourishing formula moisturizes and softens lashes with protein, vitamins, and natural oils to help prevent lash breakage.

Outrageous Lashes Mineral Lengthening Mascara – It’s been¬†Reviewed by Jenn from The Style Geek – is a volumizing formula that combines conditioning benefits for perfectly extended, defined lashes. The exclusively designed brush allows for smooth, even application while it lifts and separates each lash from root to tip. This mascara keeps lashes strong and flexible with amino acids, vitamins, and botanicals. It‚Äôs long-wearing, non-flaking, and smudge-proof too.

At the end of the day, take makeup off gently with Tu’el Cleansing Oil – here’s how. I buy natural baby wipes to clean my eye makeup off after applying Cleansing Oil. The wipes also come in handy if the mascara is older and gets clumpy. I just gently pat the wand on the wipe to remove excess mascara. Check out Fabulous Lashes! post for more Lash Tips.

If you’re new to Star Brows, you may not know about The Monthly Product Feature or Rewards yet. To put it simply, 10% of all your product purchases, all the time, go toward free Service Enhancements like Raindrop Therapy, Lash Tint, Chemical Peels, or Star Massage.

When a product is the Monthly Feature, however, you’ll get 20% back in Rewards.¬†This month’s featured products are: Outrageous Lashes Mineral Lengthening Mascara $26 ($5 in Rewards) and Mineral Lash Prime¬†$22 ($4 in Rewards).

See you at the new spa!

New Years Eve Makeup 2011!

Unfortunately my ‚Äúpre-bash massage‚ÄĚ was just cancelled – dang ūüôĀ – so I‚Äôm writing an NYE makeup post instead!

Happy New Year’s party¬†preparations¬†to all of you!¬†I‚Äôm getting ready for The Golden Era event at my father‚Äôs winery. I want to look my best, and I want you to look your best too – even if you’re not planning to go out for NYE! Here are eight steps to a flawless look:

1. Exfoliate – Perfect makeup requires well-tended skin. A week to a couple of days before the big night start doing masks, peels, and scrubs. The Cleansing Oil is also an excellent way to polish, exfoliate, and brighten your skin: Do a 20-minute massage with it instead of the normal quick cleanse. (Did you know the Cleansing Oil takes off makeup really well? Buh-bye makeup dissolver.)

Of course, hopefully you have consulted a skincare professional about what products are best for your skin. If you trust your exfoliant not to cause a breakout or irritate your skin, using one even the night before will help your skin look radiant.

My picks: Gyco-A Gel, Crystal C Serum and Peeling Cream. Just so happens two of these are January’s Product Feature with Double Rewards!

2. Moisturize РThose of you who read my blog regularly know that when you discipline the skin, you also need to use plenty of TLC. Moisturize the entire face, neck, and décolleté, as well as the eye area. Even oily and acne-prone skin types need moisturizer. Your makeup will look so much better if your skin is well hydrated.

My picks: Hy-Drate, Vitamin Cream, Chamomile, Eye Plus Cream, Lipo-Gen.

3.¬†Prime –¬†Every great artist knows that preparing the canvas is key. Getting the skin ready for the application of cosmetics makes the finished product look so much better. Absorb Oil Control is perfect for oily and acne-prone skin: It is an oil controller and hydrator in one. Mineral Primer will fill in the fine lines and imperfections and make your foundation last. Use Concealer around the eye area.

4. Apply Foundation ‚Äď Mineral Makeup is my favorite for your base. I carry BDB Duo¬†Concealer:¬†it’s a pencil with concealer on one end and highlighter on the other – another “twofer”!

5. Add Color ‚Äď Glitter (small particles, used sparingly) is a hot look for NYE. Aging skin doesn’t do well with glitter though. I¬†personally¬†like the Youngblood Mineral Makeup in the color Sunglow for sparkle and pop.¬†Blush should be applied to the apple of the cheek only if you have a very thin and long face, so you can create width. If your face is round, apply blush on the cheek starting at the edge of the iris and swooping up to the temples and into the hairline.

Shadow color can be added next. Remember: if you are playing up the eyes, go easy on the lips, and vice versa.

6. Lashes ‚ÄstBlackout Mineral Mascara by Youngblood. I always use two mascaras. I find I get the best lashes that way. Lash Primer is also excellent for extra volume and conditioning. For those of us who need to curl our lashes, I like the MAC curler best.

7. Lips ‚Äď Bright and bold is on trend for both NYE and spring 2011. I like recommending a lip pencil and plumping colored gloss ‚Äď both by¬†Youngblood Mineral Cosmetics.

8.¬†Eyebrows – Getting the right shape requires professional help –¬†at least to get you started, at best for¬†maintenance. You’re not stuck with the eyebrows you have: You can create the perfect brows at home. ¬†How? If you have thinning brows, start using¬†Brow Boost right away.¬†All the Billion Dollar Brows products rock!¬†Cosmetics for creating the perfect eyebrows – like pencils, powders, and brow-setting gel – will transform blah brows to bomb brows!

Youngblood Mineral Cosmetics

Youngblood is one of my favorite companies – and has been since 1998. Mineral Foundation is their¬†premier¬†product, but I carry other items (see below) in their line as well. Here’s why I absolutely love them:

  • It is a cruelty-free and environmentally responsible company. No animal testing, chemicals, alcohol, or dyes. They contain no synthetic or irritating ingredients, such as artificial fragrance, mineral oil, or petroleum.
  • It is made with pigments from the earth. They’re much healthier than cosmetics containing petroleum dyes. Mineral makeup is made of micronized, highly reflective crystals that reflect light to smooth fine lines and blemishes.
  • Mineral cosmetics also have sun protective properties.¬† That means they keep your skin healthy and youthful. Minerals do not support the growth of bacteria or microbes, and pose a lower risk of allergic reaction.
  • Youngblood offers a comprehensive set of the most realistic, natural-looking shades, for women of all ethnicities.
  • Minerals are great for use on skin recovering from harsh medical procedures, and on problem skin conditions like rosacea, acne, and discoloration. They began in a medical context, to be used by patients with skin traumatized by laser treatments, chemical treatments, and cosmetic surgery.
  • Youngblood uses rice starch as a healthy alternative to talc which is a filler found in other mineral makeup. Talc blocks pores, drys your skin, and causes irritation¬†. Rice powder absorbs oil, sets makeup, is long-lasting, doesn’t move, and provides a beautiful matte finish.
  • Clean and lightweight, it allows your skin to breathe and is non-comedogenic (it won’t block pores or cause irritation). It provides flawless coverage, you’ll feel like you’re wearing no makeup at all.
  • Youngblood covers and¬†participates in ¬†shows like LA Fashion Week, and The Beauty Show, they provide coverage of Fashion Runways and they show up in National Beauty Magazines. This gives me¬†confidence¬†in the fact that they know current trends and they have a finger on the pulse of the beauty biz.

What’s in it? Mica, Octyldodecyl Stearoyl Stearate, Zinc Stearate, Silica, Oryza Sativa (Rice) Starch, Lauroyl Lysine, Carthamus Tinctorius (Safflower) Seed Oil, Aloe Barbadensis (Aloe Vera) Leaf Extract, Tocopherol, Lonicera Caprifolium (Honeysuckle) Flower Extract, Lonicera Japonica (Honeysuckle) Flower Extract, Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil.¬†May Contain: Titanium Dioxide, Iron Oxides, Bismuth Oxychloride. .28 oz $41

Picture Perfect

I did a photo shoot the other day down at the Creek in the little village of Arroyo Grande with  photographer and friend, Marilyn Rivas Tate. What a beautiful setting, and what a photographer! Marilyn (and her equipment) were amazing.

At 55 I wasn’t very confidant about doing “beauty shots”. I knew I could do my makeup – duh, and I knew she could make the magic on her end, but I’m not a 20¬†something¬†model anymore – so I was apprehensive.

I had to do my makeup early in the morning because I had a full day of clients. My everyday makeup would have left my features washed-out for photos.

Here is a list of what I did for my session with Marilyn and what I recommend when I do makeup for a special event or photo session.

1.) One week before the event you should do your last skincare treatment. I recommend a facial Peel that is appropriate for your skin-type. An exfoliating and hydrating treatment will provide a smoother, more even canvas for makeup application.

2.) 3 days after a peel you can have your eyebrows waxed. Fabulous brows are a must!

3.) To prep the skin before you apply makeup:¬†cleanse your face, use a product with sodium hylauronate (Hy-Drate by Tu’el) to retain the skin’s water, and apply sunscreen.

4.) If you need sweat-proof makeup for the heat, humidity, or the scrutiny of  flashbulbs, wear an oil absorbing product. Greasy skin does not look pretty in pictures or in real life.

My pick: Absorb by Tu’el

5.) Prime-time! Almost ready for makeup. But first, primer is something to have on hand when you have a crazy-long day, or when you want a flawless look. It creates a protective base and a smoother surface for fine lines, acne scaring or any other irregularity in the skin. It allows foundation to be applied evenly and effortlessly.

6.) Hmmm, what foundation to wear? Youngblood Mineral Makeup of course. I love the option of very light to full coverage with this mineral makeup. It also has an SPF rating of up to 30 (about 8 SPF for most applications). Did you know it is better to have wear  mineral makeup than bare skin when going out?

7.) Next add highlighters, bronzing powders, blush and contouring.

  • Highlight the eyes. Under the brow bone and by the tear duct, place some white or brightening highlighter. I don’t love shimmer or glitter on older, crepey or dry skin :'(¬†matte¬†is better. But for all you kids out there (or for those who don’t give a s*^#) shimmer away!

My pick: Youngblood Mineral Makeup

  • Contour the eyes. Puffy upper lids require shadow in earth tones (grays¬†or browns) to¬†minimize.

My pick: Trucco Hi-brow Trio

  • Use a darker foundation or bronzing powder, in hollows of checks and possibly under the chin and the sides of the nose – every face is¬†different.

My pick:  Sunglow Mineral Makeup

8.) Lashes! Curl, prime, curl again, and coat 1,2,3 or more times.

My pick: Youngblood’s Outrageous Lashes Mineral Lengthening Mascara

9.) Lips! For long-lasting lip color naturally, I use lip liner all over and then touch up with gloss.

My pick: I love Youngblood Mineral Lip Liner and Gloss combo.

10.) Brows! A professional shaping and consultation is essential. Don’t do any waxing at least 3 days before the event in case you break out a little.

  • Use a pencil a little lighter than you want the brows to end up, to fill in and lengthen the brow shape.
  • Brush them out.
  • A brow powder will soften and add dimension to the eyebrow (the same Trucco Hi-brow Trio you used to contour the eyes is perfect).

11.) And finally, whether your on the big or the little screen, you need to understand the importance of taking it all off at the end of the day.

I can’t wait to get my skin clean because I know the secret to having great looking skin in the morning is removing all that¬†makeup at night, and this is one of the most important beauty tips you can follow.

If you leave makeup on overnight, it can clog your pores causing all kinds of breakouts, blackheads, and uneven skin tone. Plus, your skin renews itself at night and cant effectively do that if its covered in old makeup.

My pick: Hydrophylic Cleansing Oil and Herbalizer by Tu’el

12.) And last but not least, get plenty of beauty sleep the night before!

See you at the spa!

Youngblood Mineral Mascara-The difference is eye-catching!

Happy Monday, Star Brows Readers! I’m Jenn (a.k.a The Style Geek), a friend of Linda’s who occasionally helps her with some business and marketing ventures, or, as Linda puts it, I “help her and her business be cooler.” (Though how I ever got to be considered “cool” is beyond me!)¬†

In case you didn’t know, Linda is off enjoying a European vacation (raise your hand if you’re jealous), and she asked me to make a blog post or two for her while she’s gone.¬† I readily agreed, as 1.) I can’t really say enough great things about Linda and the work she does at Star Brows and 2.) she recently introduced me to my new favorite makeup product–Outrageous Lashes Mineral Lengthening Mascara¬†and I just have to tell you all about it. But first, a little background…

When I was 13, my mom threw me and a few of my friends a Mary Kay party and I very vividly remember the Mary Kay consultant telling me that I had beautiful, long eyelashes and should do whatever I could to play those up.¬† Since then, I’ve been on a quest to find the perfect mascara.¬† My journey has taken me through several different mascaras, including:

  • Maybelline’s Voluminous Mascara – Ok option if you don’t have a lot of money to spend; but it flakes off very easily, leaving black dust all over your face by the end of the day.¬† You get what you pay for, I guess.
  • Almay’s One Coat Nourishing Mascara- So average, it pains me.
  • Benefit Cosmetic’s Bad Girl Lash in Blue- Fun alternative when you’re feeling funky, but not practical for every day.
  • Diorshow Mascara by Christian Dior- Average, pricey and the tube dried up really quickly.¬† The company should probably just stick to clothing.

Needless to say, when Linda told me about Youngblood’s mascara, I was skeptical at best.¬† However, after one week of use, I can honestly say that it is BY FAR the best mascara I have ever used.¬† It not only lengthens my lashes to new heights, but it darkens them in such a way that I (almost) don’t need to wear eyeliner.

Personally, I judge a mascara by its wand and the bristles on Youngblood’s mascara wand are close together, meaning they will separate the eyelashes one-by-one, not into clumps. Additionally, when I apply the mascara to my eyelashes, I can feel the wand gripping my lashes to lengthen them.

BUT, don’t take my word for how awesome Youngblood mascara is. The proof, my friend, is in the pictures.¬† Check out this before and after of my eyes WITHOUT Youngblood mascara and then WITH Youngblood mascara–and then run, do not walk, to Star Brows and buy some for yourself!

Fabulous Lashes!

Hypotrichosis is the name for having inadequate or not enough lash, it also can cause brow hair to be sparse. Not caring for the lashes properly can also thin them, as can certain¬†prescription¬†medicines and dare I say so does the aging process! So, if you fall into one of these¬†categories–or if you just think your brows and lashes are too thin–listen up.

Brow Boost by Billion Dollar Brows is the newest, ¬†most affordable ¬†and safest product on the market to grow lashes and brows, no prescription required! You can expect to grow lashes or brows in as little as 30 days and there are no harmful side affects, and it’s only $20!

Since we all want long, lush lashes, here’s a few killer ways to thicken them:

  • Use a lash growth product like Brow Boost¬†(you can use it for brows too).
  • Dye your lashes (At Star Brows, you save when you do tinting (I use a vegetable dye) of brows or lashes with a facial or brow waxing service).
  • Learn how to curl or thicken your lashes without the extra chemical agents. ¬†(Try Shu Uemura Eyelash Curler) To curl your lashes, take your eyelash curler and place it at the root of your lashes. Hold firmly for ten seconds and release. If your lashes are stick straight, you can move up slightly away from the roots, repeating the curl.
  • Use a mineral¬†Lash Primer. It conditions as it thickens.
  • Use a clean disposable¬† mascara wand to un-clump and¬†separate¬†as needed after the mascara application.
  • Brush the roots of your lashes back and forth a couple of times before sweeping through to the tips.
  • Choose the right mascara. I love Youngblood’s Outrageous Lashes Mineral Lengthening Mascara!
  • Toss your mascara every three months, this is the longest shelf life any tube of mascara has. If it starts getting¬†gloppy use a baby wipe to clean off the mascara wand’s excess.

Note: You can temporarily treat hypotrichosis with an RX of Latisse, which is a drug used in the treatment of eye disorders. Their literature says that the eyelashes will go back to their former short/sparse selves within 1 month of discontinuing the product. There is also a risk of darkening around the surrounding skin which “may” go away after discontinued use, and the iris may have color changes as well, which will not reverse. Yeah, not a fan.
