New! Deep Pore Cleansing System

mature duoNew to Star Brows and on double Rewards now through August 2016!

If you’re like me you want bright, clear, and ageless skin. I have a secret, it’s massage. Simple right?  I’ve been talking about and using Cleansing Oils for about 20 years now and it never gets old! These oils make a great vehicle for the massage and cleansing process at home or during a Facial! Tu’el pairs the Oils by skin-type with Herbal Toners. Here are some questions about the process I’ve had over the years:

  • I’ve always been told not to touch my face, and if I do, gently.                                                   “Touch your face and go deep, every night! It stimulates blood flow, relaxes underlying muscles, reduces puffiness, clears sinuses, and exfoliates the skin. (Acne skin is an exception, you’ll want to do more of an acupressure type massage so you don’t over stimulate the skin but still address the underlying systems.) “
  • My skin is acne prone, oil feels icky on my skin, and seems to make me break out.         “There is truth to this, however your skin is steeped in oil so it’s not a bad thing to cleanse with an oil designed for acneic skin. Also, oil is accepted into the pores easily because of the familiarity so a deep cleansing is possible. The pores can lock down when introduced to harsh, sudsy cleansers.”
  • Can’t I use any oil?                                                                                                                                  “Yup! I like Tu’el Deep Pore Cleansing System because it addresses different skin types, uses appropriate essential oils for each type, and has an herbal Toner that breaks the Cleansing Oil down afterward.

Cleansing Oils and Herbal Toners – August Product Feature

think deep

The best time to try or buy at Star Brows is when a product is the Product Feature because you’ll get Rewards and save 20%!

Cleansing Oils go deeper than milks or gels. They bond with your skin’s natural oils, drawing out more dirt, make-up and pollutants than your foaming gel or milk cleanser ever could. Combined with their specially designed herbal toners, they become water soluble to ultra cleanse and exfoliate. It’s also ideal for eye makeup removal and conditioning your lashes. This process prepares your skin for maximum absorption of serums, creams and masks. Cleansing Oils and Herbal Toners enable your post-cleanse products to penetrate deeper and deliver active ingredients where they’re most effective.

How to use:

STEP 1: On dry skin with dry hands, massage 3 pumps of the Cleansing Oil for your skin-type onto face, neck and chest. Use small circles to massage the skin thoroughly for added benefit.

STEP 2: Massage 3 pumps of Herbal Toner over Cleansing Oil. Add cool water gradually to emulsify and turn milky white. Rinse until you no longer feel the cleansing solution.

Here is Lori Nestore from Eva’s Esthetics talking about Cleansing Oils and Herbal Toners and demonstrating their use.

Motorized Facial Brushes: Harmful or Helpful?

facial brushI usually like to focus on doing product reviews based on what we love and use at the spa, leaving the rest to all of the great beauty bloggers out there. But the motorized brush (the most popular being the Clarisonic) has become so popular that I ask you to consider the following  information if you’re currently using or considering purchasing one.

These are the effects and changes in the skin I have observed in clients who have used a motorized brush as directed by the manufacturer:

What are the motorized brush company claims?

1. Removes makeup six times better than manual cleansing

The electric brush is really just one exfoliating tool to physically lift off dry, dead skin cells and, in the process, remove dirt and makeup. But the truth is that you can only remove so much dead skin without affecting live skin. You do not want to exfoliate to the point of destroying healthy cells.

2. Gentle enough to use twice a day

My problem is not with the brush itself, because exfoliating is very important. However, I do have a concern with how often they recommend using it. It is my belief that this is way too much of this kind of exfoliation, I generally recommend using it no more than 2-3 times per week.

You have to understand how exfoliation affects the skin. An electric (or hand-held manual brush for that matter), facial scrub, acid, enzyme, wash cloth, or whatever form of cell-turn method you use can cause skin damage and may accelerate aging if used too frequently.

3. Minimizes the appearance of visible pores

Exfoliating too aggressively and too often can create inflammation (even if not visible), setting off a response that creates free radicals.

4. Reduces oily areas, dry skin patches, and blemishes

Exfoliating too aggressively and too often can cause dryness and disrupt the skin’s lipid barrier. This allows moisture to seep out of the cells more easily, causing them to become dehydrated. Your skin will produce more oil to compensate for the fluid loss.

5. Safe for cleansing all skin types

This just isn’t true. Excessive (or the wrong kind) of stimulation to the skin can be damaging, especially for clients with a skin disorder like rosacea.

6. Recommended for use with any non-abrasive cleanser

Definitely don’t use an abrasive or even a sudsing (pH modifying surfactant) cleanser. But this device seems to be used primarily by the “more is better” crowd, and I’ll bet some users are adding a grainy scrub.

Here are a few skin facts:

A major cause of aging is chronic and prolonged inflammation, which is associated with tissue destruction.

When you give the skin trauma, it goes into repair mode and stimulates cellular regeneration. This can be very beneficial to the skin, but if you create trauma too often by over-exfoliating, then it’s continually setting up a cascade of free radical damage that triggers premature aging. This is the last thing the skin needs to stay looking young.

For skin that is extremely reactive to stimulation (skin of color and for those prone to severe discoloration) you need to treat your skin gently to avoid post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation resulting in increased skin discoloration.

You do want your skin hygienically clean, but not clean like you want your kitchen floor. There is a certain amount of good bacteria that the skin needs to keep it healthy and functioning well, so you don’t want to strip it by over-using any product or tool.

What’s the right amount of exfoliation?

These are my favorite forms of exfoliation but they must be tailored to the individual’s skin type and condition, as well as personal skincare habits:

  • Use an alcohol-free Glycolic (AHA or BHA serum 1-3 times a week ) as recommended by a skincare specialist for your individual skin type and condition: Power Peel.
  • A gentle facial scrub like  Power Scrub OR your brush 2-3 times a week—and that’s it. The idea here is that using a fruit/food acid serum will dissolve the dry skin cells while a physical exfoliant like a scrub or brush will lift off the dry skin cells. They both work differently.
  • Cleansing Oil exfoliates (by the gentle massage action you use to apply it), and deeply cleanses because the skin doesn’t “resist” or tighten to the medium of oil as it is symbiotic with the oil found naturally in the skin. If red-flags go up when I use the phrase “cleansing oil”  know that we use individual  formulas designed for oily, acne-prone, sensitive and dry skin types.
  • A professional Resurfacing Treatment should be performed regularly. Recommendations for frequency vary, but the most effective is ten days to two weeks apart..

Cleansing Oil and Herbalizer – May Product Feature 2012

Tu’el Cleansing Oil and Herbalizer by Eva’s Esthetics  is my favorite way to cleanse the skin. It is like having an at-home  spa experience every night. This innovative two-step cleansing system features natural elements like fresh smelling mandarin oil, calming chamomile extract, healing extracts of arnica, and purifying grapefruit extract. You can experience it all in the Mother’s Day Special Offer this month!

Nothing cleans the skin like hydrophilic oil. Oil cleansers balance your skin and prepare it for exfoliation, hydration, absorption of nutrients, and protection.

As skin cells die, they lose moisture, flatten, and migrate to the skin’s surface. The face excretes a very sticky substance known as sebum that bonds to dead skin cells. In order for these cells to be released, this oily sebum must be dissolved.

When hydrophilic oil is massaged into the skin, it bonds with the sebum and releases the dead cells. This release of the dead layer of skin achieves exceptional pore cleansing and decongestion and a more refined skin appearance. Adding the correct Herbalizer, a sugar-based extract with essential oils, creates a custom cleansing system. This unique method balances the skin and eliminates the need for astringents or toners.

There are four custom formulations of Cleansers and five Herbalizers based on this cleansing system to ensure that, regardless of your skin type – dry, combination, oily, impure, or reactive – your skin will feel the profound difference of cleansing with Tu’eL.

Outrageous Lashes Kit – September Product Features 2011

Gorgeous and Healthy Lashes

Youngblood Mineral Cosmetics makes two fabulous products for eyelashes and they are this month’s Product Features! Beautiful lashes need to be cared for, and these mineral and vitamin-rich formulas do just that.

Mineral Lash Prime – This milky white lash “cream” works under mascara to create visibly fuller and thicker lashes after the first coat of mascara. The nourishing formula moisturizes and softens lashes with protein, vitamins, and natural oils to help prevent lash breakage.

Outrageous Lashes Mineral Lengthening Mascara – It’s been Reviewed by Jenn from The Style Geek – is a volumizing formula that combines conditioning benefits for perfectly extended, defined lashes. The exclusively designed brush allows for smooth, even application while it lifts and separates each lash from root to tip. This mascara keeps lashes strong and flexible with amino acids, vitamins, and botanicals. It’s long-wearing, non-flaking, and smudge-proof too.

At the end of the day, take makeup off gently with Tu’el Cleansing Oil – here’s how. I buy natural baby wipes to clean my eye makeup off after applying Cleansing Oil. The wipes also come in handy if the mascara is older and gets clumpy. I just gently pat the wand on the wipe to remove excess mascara. Check out Fabulous Lashes! post for more Lash Tips.

If you’re new to Star Brows, you may not know about The Monthly Product Feature or Rewards yet. To put it simply, 10% of all your product purchases, all the time, go toward free Service Enhancements like Raindrop Therapy, Lash Tint, Chemical Peels, or Star Massage.

When a product is the Monthly Feature, however, you’ll get 20% back in Rewards. This month’s featured products are: Outrageous Lashes Mineral Lengthening Mascara $26 ($5 in Rewards) and Mineral Lash Prime $22 ($4 in Rewards).

The New Spa in Grover Beach Open For Mother’s Day

I started my dream business, Star Brows, in Arroyo Grande California four years ago, specializing in a unique “brow graphing” technique, which I developed at my Minnesota spa. Due to the success and popularity of that technique, I needed to expand, and now have a new home! Everything you know and love about Star Brows will stay the same, but better – I hope you’ll agree!

On April 15th I moved my eyebrow couture, skincare, massage, and body waxing spa to 1065 West Grand Avenue to Grover Beach (Shangri-La!) and have created a luxurious spa setting that I know you will love.

Originally, I really wanted to stay in AG, but then I found this amazing space with great exposure and plenty of room to grow. It’s across from Miners in Grover Beach. This location really fits my “brand.” You will truly feel like the star you are when you’re there. I wanted to create a more spa-like atmosphere so you could enjoy the full array of Star Brows services.

I’ve added two private treatment rooms with sound-proof walls and solid core doors :), a casual and open feeling makeup and waxing lounge, and an serene waiting area – and we’re closer to the beach! Who could ask for more? I’ll be posting pictures soon.

But, like any dream, there have been (and are) hurdles to overcome. In the end, though, it’s all worth it. I hope this encourages you to follow your dreams too. Turning dreams into reality takes guts, a lot of hard work, optimism, help from those who support you (thank you all!), and a generous pinch of the miraculous!

Next Sunday is Mother’s Day, and I am poised to help you celebrate. Hmmm, what would you really like? I come from a background of providing fabulous spa experiences, and now that I have the space and the environment for it, I’d like treat you.

Here is a sneak peek of a spa experience created to celebrate mom’s day, or “just because” – at the new location – offered for a limited time:

Spa Facial and Massage Treatment

Arrive a couple of minutes early so you can get settled and relax for a few minutes in the quiet environment of the new spa, and plan on staying for about an hour and a half.

As you climb under crisp, clean, warmed sheets your body’s curves will be cradled by special contoured cushions.

Detoxifying and de-stressing drops of essential oils will be applied along your spine (Raindrop Therapy), to coax your body into a state of bliss and calm, followed by a back massage given at just the right pressure for you. When the knots are eased, you turn over and the Star Massage begins with Tu’el’s Cleansing Oils and Herbalizers chosen for your skin type. Puffiness, sinus pressure, jaw tension and all signs of stress dissipate from your face, neck and should – mmm, who knew it could feel this good?

New Years Eve Makeup 2011!

Unfortunately my “pre-bash massage” was just cancelled – dang 🙁 – so I’m writing an NYE makeup post instead!

Happy New Year’s party preparations to all of you! I’m getting ready for The Golden Era event at my father’s winery. I want to look my best, and I want you to look your best too – even if you’re not planning to go out for NYE! Here are eight steps to a flawless look:

1. Exfoliate – Perfect makeup requires well-tended skin. A week to a couple of days before the big night start doing masks, peels, and scrubs. The Cleansing Oil is also an excellent way to polish, exfoliate, and brighten your skin: Do a 20-minute massage with it instead of the normal quick cleanse. (Did you know the Cleansing Oil takes off makeup really well? Buh-bye makeup dissolver.)

Of course, hopefully you have consulted a skincare professional about what products are best for your skin. If you trust your exfoliant not to cause a breakout or irritate your skin, using one even the night before will help your skin look radiant.

My picks: Gyco-A Gel, Crystal C Serum and Peeling Cream. Just so happens two of these are January’s Product Feature with Double Rewards!

2. Moisturize – Those of you who read my blog regularly know that when you discipline the skin, you also need to use plenty of TLC. Moisturize the entire face, neck, and décolleté, as well as the eye area. Even oily and acne-prone skin types need moisturizer. Your makeup will look so much better if your skin is well hydrated.

My picks: Hy-Drate, Vitamin Cream, Chamomile, Eye Plus Cream, Lipo-Gen.

3. Prime – Every great artist knows that preparing the canvas is key. Getting the skin ready for the application of cosmetics makes the finished product look so much better. Absorb Oil Control is perfect for oily and acne-prone skin: It is an oil controller and hydrator in one. Mineral Primer will fill in the fine lines and imperfections and make your foundation last. Use Concealer around the eye area.

4. Apply FoundationMineral Makeup is my favorite for your base. Use a small brush for extra coverage in the areas that need it. Use a darker color to contour, like the hollows of your cheeks or the sides of your nose. Contour the eyes with shades of brown, especially if you have droopy lids. (Remember: dark recedes, light brings forward.) Highlighter under the brow bone accentuates the arch. I carry BDB Duo Concealer: it’s a pencil with concealer on one end and highlighter on the other – another “twofer”!

5. Add Color – Glitter (small particles, used sparingly) is a hot look for NYE. Aging skin doesn’t do well with glitter though. I personally like the Youngblood Mineral Makeup in the color Sunglow for sparkle and pop. Blush should be applied to the apple of the cheek only if you have a very thin and long face, so you can create width. If your face is round, apply blush on the cheek starting at the edge of the iris and swooping up to the temples and into the hairline.

Shadow color can be added next. Remember: if you are playing up the eyes, go easy on the lips, and vice versa.

6. Lashes – Blackout Mineral Mascara by Youngblood. I always use two mascaras. I find I get the best lashes that way. Lash Primer is also excellent for extra volume and conditioning. For those of us who need to curl our lashes, I like the MAC curler best.

7. Lips Bright and bold is on trend for both NYE and spring 2011. I like recommending a lip pencil and plumping colored gloss – both by Youngblood Mineral Cosmetics.

8. Eyebrows – Getting the right shape requires professional help – at least to get you started, at best for maintenance. You’re not stuck with the eyebrows you have: You can create the perfect brows at home.  How? If you have thinning brows, start using Brow Boost right away. All the Billion Dollar Brows products rock! Cosmetics for creating the perfect eyebrows – like pencils, powders, and brow-setting gel – will transform blah brows to bomb brows!

See you at the spa!

October Product Feature 2010

I am so excited to bring you this month’s special Product Feature. (It’s a 2-fer!)  Tu’el’s Cleansing Oils and Herbalizers and the new Travel Pack, which includes the Tu’el cleansing system for A.M. and P.M.,  Hy-Drate,  (both in 1 oz. bottles), a sample of Peeling Cream and a sample of the appropriate evening moisturizer for your skin-type.

These products are a delight to use  because they bring “spa” home to you. I don’t choose to carry products at Star Brows on performance alone. I want to use skincare that inspires me, works, is as close to “natural” as possible, is a good value and is enjoyable to use.

Taking care of your skin is sometimes perceived as drudgery, but personal care can be renewing. It’s simply a matter of perspective. If you are in the former camp, are you open to thinking about skincare in a new way?

Last month we launched Star Brow’s Rewards and I couldn’t keep September’s feature, Youngblood’s Pressed Mineral Compacts, on the shelves! I ended up happily doing  rain checks!

I’m so glad you’re all enjoying the new Rewards perks.  I appreciate all of you!

The beautiful model in this picture is a friend and client,  Amanda De Bello. She brings the customer testimonial for this month’s feature:

“Linda was kind enough to answer many of my questions by simply “trying out” Tu’el products on my face, which ended in a purchase I do not regret.  The Cleansing Oil is such a relief to my skin (it even gently removes makeup!) & I can feel my face literally getting softer each day I use it.  The Herbalizer is like nothing I’ve ever tried before; my skin seems to “drink it up” and the herbs smell so good! I have been known to spend money on high quality, big name products, and honestly just wasn’t getting the results I was happy with. What I realized is that previously I was willing to spend whatever it took to “fix” what damage was done to my skin–and now I am on a preventive path to consistent care and nurturing my skin daily with the entire Tu’el cleansing system. Thank you Star Brows!”

The Product Feature(s) of the month give you Double Rewards. The Cleansing Oil and Herbalizer are each in 4 oz sizes and are $50 for the set. The Travel Pack (seen right)  is $48. That’s $5 in Star Brows Rewards regularly, but ($10 this month).  And who doesn’t love FREE spa services?

And as dear old dad says, “I didn’t just save $10, I MADE $10!”

As many of you know, I won an award for a new treatment called Star Massage which utilizes the Tu’el Hydrophilic Cleansing Oil System.  This link will take you to the YouTube I produced–as well as to Tu’el’s founder Lori Nestori’s YouTube–on the Oil and Herbalizer cleansing system.

See you at the spa!

The 5 Worst Skin Care Mistakes – Part 2 National Skin Care Awareness Month

Caring for your skin is a lifetime pursuit, and it’s never too early to start. In honor of  National Skin Care Awareness Month (NSCAM) – I’d like to offer 50% off the Express Facial for your daughters or sons – 18 years old or younger, during the month of September.

Inspired by NSCAM here is Part #2 of a 3 part post about; skincare myths, truths, mistakes and tips to help you care the largest organ of your body – your skin!

THE FIVE WORST SKIN CARE MISTAKES

SKIN MISTAKE #1- USING SOAP TO WASH YOUR FACE.

If you wash your skin with bar soap (no matter how much you paid for it), you strip your skin of all its water, which instantly creates dead skin cell buildup. After that, you have to quickly put moisturizer on to put back exactly what you just took out—makes no sense!  The binders that hold a bar soap together have a high pH balance, making it too drying for most skin types. But they also reverse the benefits from any exfoliants that you’re using, since those are intended to remove dry skin cells. Instead, in the morning use gel based cleansers for oily skin or milky – creamy cleansers for dry skin and Tu’el water loving oil and herbalizer cleansing system for the evening.

SKIN MISTAKE #2- USING HARSH PRODUCTS TO CONTROL OIL.

When it comes to skin care products for oily skin, many skin care companies focus on products that simply remove the oil by using strong, harsh and dehydrating ingredients. While it will give you an immediate ‘tight’ feeling, it then creates a backlash hours later with an increase in oil production.
The amount of oil your skin produces is tied to the hydration levels in your skin. Oily skins don’t need additional oil (which is why oil-free moisturizers like Hy-Drate are suggested) but you still need water in the skin. When the skin doesn’t have the water it needs, the skin attempts to balance itself by producing more oil (by stimulating the nerve endings) to compensate for the lack of water. To lessen oil, choose gentle, sulfate-free, low-foaming cleansers, avoid alcohol-based toners and always use moisturizer.

SKIN MISTAKE #3- NOT USING TONER AFTER EVERY WASHING.

Toners are misunderstood. Most people aren’t really sure what they do and they often don’t use them because the alcohol found in most, is irritating. Toners without alcohol are a perfect way to give your skin the water and hydration it so desperately needs. Your skin cells are like fish, they need water to live – without water they die prematurely resulting in unhealthy skin—not to mention dry skin cells. Use an alcohol-free toner every time you wash, make sure to leave it damp before applying your serum or moisturizer to seal in the hydration. Try Senegece Climate Control.

SKIN MISTAKE #4- OVER-EXFOLIATING .

Exfoliation is extremely beneficial to the skin; it reduces clogged pores, blackheads and breakouts, removes surface dry skin cells and  softens the appearance of fine lines, making large pores appear less noticeable and encouraging new, healthy skin cell growth. But when it comes to exfoliation, less is more – work smarter, not harder. If you use facial scrubs, acids, enzymes and get professional chemical peel treatments too often, you can damage the health of the skin. By over-exfoliating, you thin the skin and damage the natural protective barrier which can accelerate aging and chronic, prolonged inflammation. Chemical exfoliation (acids) and physical exfoliation (scrubs) should never be over used and TLC must always be used in equal measure in the form of moisturizers, toners, serums and  calming – soothing masks.

At Star Brows, every time you come in for a service I look at your skin and make professional recommendations. The skin is always changing – so how you care for it must also change.

SKIN MISTAKE #5- PICKING AT YOUR SKIN.

Getting blemishes is a fact of life that can occur well into adulthood. While there are many things you can do to prevent them, it’s really important to treat them properly once they appear—and this is where many people lack knowledge. For the most part, a blemish will only last 5-7 days, but a post-breakout red or dark scar from picking at a blemish can last for months – sometimes a lifetime. The only time you should extract a blemish is when a visible whitehead has come to the surface of the skin. This infection needs to get out, so you can gently remove it. But if you pick at something that is deep under the skin, you’ll only make it worse—and an oozing scab is a lot more difficult to cover with makeup than a closed bump! Tu’el Clear-It is great for spot treating, as well as caring for post wax skin bumps.
