Some of their proprietary ingredients include:

Hyaluronic Acid (HA)
An essential hydrator for everyone’s skin! Each molecule of hyaluronic acid can hold 1,000 times its molecular weight in moisture. It is known for its hydrating properties along with its natural delivery into the skin. Being one of the most valuable ingredients in skin care DermaQuest has incorporated this active into 90% of its product line to provide increased smoothness for plump, hydrated skin from the inside out.

Skin Brighteners
The SkinBrite Collection is formulated with some of the most advanced skin brighteners to date! Each formula is uniquely created with many different tyrosinase inhibitors to stop the melanogenesis process in multiple steps giving you the most illumining skin tone results. ChromaBright imparts the latest in skin brightening technology to effectively correct pigmentation and un-even skin tone. DermaQuest has incorporated this innovative ingredient into all the SkinBrite products.

Plant Stem Cells
Advancements with stem cell technology have continued to provide more powerful and effective marine derived and botanical plant stem cells in the skin care market. DermaQuest combines the latest generation of plant stem cells to reduce pigmentation, fine lines, and protect the skin from environmental damages. These plant stem cells contain all the active molecules of the plant to effectively address multiple areas of concern. Sea Fennel, Edelweiss, Gardenia, and Lilac plant stem cells are incorporated into some of the most advanced anti-aging products included in the Stem Cell 3D collection.

Peptides
Made up of essential amino acids, these active ingredients are small yet powerful to drastically change the skin! Peptides are key anti-aging ingredients that reduce fine lines and wrinkles, promote collagen, reduce inflammation and brighten skin tone. With new peptides being discovered every year they are considered to be an active ingredient that will continually change and advance with time.

Vitamin C
Is one of the most essential nutrients for the body and is a key component to maintaining healthy glowing skin. Vitamin C is an active ingredient that brightens and tightens the skin. Keeping up with cutting edge technology we have incorporated the latest lipid soluble form of vitamin C, Tetrahexyldecyl Ascorbate, in our superior formulations. The most stable form of vitamin C with three times better penetration than L-Ascorbic acid! Tetrahexyldecyl Ascorbate can be found throughout the DermaQuest line and is most concentrated in C-Lipoic products.

AHA/BHA
Alpha Hydroxy Acids and Beta Hydroxy Acids have been around for many years and continue their strong stride in being very effective performance ingredients to treat a wide array of concerns. These key hydroxy acids promote an increased cell turnover to reveal luminous new skin cells at the surface. While providing a quicker cell turnover rate AHA’s/BHA’s impart multi functional qualities to improve skin texture, decrease pore size, reduce congestion, moisturize, and promote collagen.

Minerals
DermaQuest brings you the highest grade micronized minerals in all of our sun protection products. Zinc and Titanium are utilized for their superior UV ray protection and pro-longed broad spectrum coverage. ZinClear SPF 30 offers you clear and tinted versions leaving the skin protected yet covered with a flawless finish. Minerals are safe, effective, reduce inflammation, and are designed to be used on all skin types especially sensitive and acneic!

Antioxidants

Essential for all skin types they protect our skin from free radical damage that our skin encounters on a daily basis. Co-Enzyme Q10, Idebenone, Alpha Lipoic Acid, and Green Tea Extract are widely used in DermaQuest products to give your skin an enhanced safeguard against environmental radicals.

Enzymes
These gentle enzymes act as Pacman on the skin to digest the dead surface skin cells. Papaya-Pineapple and Pumpkin Enzymes provide gentle yet visible results to reveal a more youthful glow. When used in a daily regimen other active ingredients have the ability to penetrate into the skin to provide quicker skin care results.

Keep Calm and Pay Your Dues

In this economy, it’s really tempting to complain and panic about the labor and toil of earning a living. I’m not speaking to the masses here. I know there are people who are legitimately experiencing hard times, and I wouldn’t want to minimize their plight.

My husband is launching a new business. He’s never been a solo-entrepreneur and he’s 61! It’s called: Pulcinella Wood-fired Pizza and Catering, so the topic of keeping calm and paying your dues is hot at our house!

I have 42 blog posts on Healthy Aging. That’s more than I have in any other category.  Clearly, for me at least, it’s a priority. For what it’s worth, here’s my take on making a buck along the way:

Find something you are passionate about. I believe each of us has a special calling or skill-set with an innate desire to fulfill it.  Be Alive!

Spend time dreaming about how you could use that passion to earn a living. You may just start out doing it as a hobby, then move to part-time, and so on. And remember: It’s only money.

Be willing to pay your dues. My dad used to wash his ship-mates’ clothes, and polish their shoes for extra money when he was in the Navy. Later, when he wanted to learn the gas-station business , he offered to work for free, and sometime later he bought the place! Now, at 84, he’s the owner of Robert Hall Winery, and he started the vineyard on virgin land when he was 70 years young!

How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time! It’s only hard when you look at swallowing it whole.

In Minnesota, I used to garden with a Hmong woman. She asked me something one day: “We think differently than Americans. They work a long day so they can enjoy a short evening – five days to enjoy a weekend or a lifetime to enjoy a few years in retirement?” I’ve never forgotten that. Her people, she went on to explain, consider all of their time “life.” They weave work, family, and play into their hours, days, and years. They don’t portion slots of time out to simply endure so they can get on to what they really want to do. Happiness, after all, is a choice…I say Choose Happy!

I paid my dues when I started out in the spa and wellness profession, and every time I start a new venture – or branch out in a new direction – I pay dues again.  Fresh energy needs to be cultivated, fear checked, and the vision nurtured with each new step.

In fact, in the beginning of last month I was bemoaning a new venture into the wedding market. Now just 7 weeks later, I have a great new employee (Aesthetician – Kelli June), we’ve done a very successful event for the Bridal Show at Madonna Inn,  and I’ve been asked to write another article for Skin Deep Magazine about Wedding Services.

Dare to dream, fellow sojourner. Be fearless. You only go around once, and life’s all about the journey.

See you at the spa!

Massage at Star Brows

I do massage, and I love the work, both the giving and the receiving. 🙂 I have been getting massage since I was 15. My mom used to sneak me into her health club in MN – The European Health Spa. I’d sip smoothies at the bar, lounge in the pool, bake in the steam room, nap by the pool-side, and luxuriate on the massage table.

I’ve been doing massage professionally since 1994. I started out as an employee at a clinic and moved quickly to self employment. I began hiring therapists in 2000 when I went from one treatment room to five.

I guess it’s been a big circle, as today I am a Solo Spa again and life has never been better!

My Massage/Bodywork Philosophy:

  • You need to be completely relaxed in order to enjoy a session. That’s why I use the bodyCushion™ and essential oils.
  • Customization of every service I do is essential to a great experience.  I offer Enhancements, which include deep muscle work and a treatment I developed called Star Massage: A facial, neck, and scalp treatment using aesthetic and massage techniques. Clears sinuses, reduces puffiness, and brightens skin tone. The service is customized to each individual skin type to relieve swelling, waste in the tissues, and holding patterns that create tension and lines on the face.
  • Some people want the work so deep that it is actually harmful. While I am able to work deeply into the body’s fascia, I only work as deep as the body itself allows.
  • I studied EsalenCraniosacralMyofascial Release, and Zen Shiatsu. The Shiatsu training was a private apprenticeship with an instructor over an intensive, daily, three month period. It taught me one of the most important lessons that is the hallmark of my practice: The Western therapist and client usually wants neck, shoulder and back work predominately, but the work really needs to be focused on the lower body to achieve real balance.
  • As a former professional dancer and movement educator of twenty plus years I believe that movement is the number one remedy for what ails the physical body. Analyzing how an individual moves and helping them maximize their potential and ease, has been a lifetime study.

Here’s what Star Brows clients have said:

“Linda does amazing body work. I have been to many therapists over the years and she is definitely an expert in her field. I would not hesitate to recommend her.” Steve Tullius – Chiropractor

“I received a pre-natal massage that I can still remember almost three years later” Allegra Birtcher Parreira – Workin’ Wife & Mama

“Linda takes a massage experience from the ordinary to the extraordinary! I felt instantly at ease with her the first time we met. She made me feel welcome and comfortable. She spent time asking me where my problem areas were and what concerns I had. Her spa is private, cozy, and warm. Linda’s gifts are her intuitiveness, technique, and knowledge of anatomy. She combines these beautifully and expertly!” Marilyn Rivas Tate – Photographer

Count It All Joy!

I am asked all the time, “How’s business?” by clients as well as fellow business people. My answer? “Wonderful!” In hard economic times, when so many business owners and individuals are struggling, how could this be? Am I that special – or just trying to “put on a happy face”? Neither, really. So, what’s up?

The answer is two-fold: I’m not so special – well not more special than anyone else. 🙂 And, my business – ditto. What is true however, is that there are two very doable elements that make me successful and can make you successful too.

1. Be grateful. Eucharisto – this word contains within it three elements: Gratitude, grace, and peace. Being thankful is the single most important element essential to achieving and maintaining happiness. Are things always the way I want them? No. But one act of being thankful when things aren’t going your way, is worth many times more than countless thanks when things are. Thankfulness, then, is a choice – and not a response to your situation.

2. Bring your “best self” to everything you do. Seth Godin, a favorite author/blogger, says this about business: “The extra, bonus part of your business activities that are over-the-top for no good reason, and going out of your way to build that into your brand, make your business remarkable. And today, people are ONLY responding to remarkable.”

Are my services always remarkable? Probably not. But I do bring my best self to every single interaction. Granted, sometimes my best self is just plain not enough, or maybe no matter how good it is, some won’t count it as such. So be it. After all, I do my best work with those who truly value it, and those who don’t will find someone and someplace that gives them what they want.

I moved Star Brows last year to the wonderful town of Grover Beach. I love this town for many reasons, mostly because it is on my beloved Pacific  Ocean. For this, I am beyond grateful. This location sets the stage for a spa-setting extraordinaire. Not only can I take a break and head out for an invigorating, uplifting stroll (instead of feeling grumpy about a no-show client), but it is a free gym where I can work out and clear my head of all negativity, worry, and exhaustion and commune with my Creator and His creation.

My work is fulfilling to me:

I am honored by the people I meet and get to know.

I love the spectacular products I bring to them, like the newest in my lineup: Heather Gardner jewelry.

The services I offer are diverse and gratifying to perform. I can help create beautiful skin, give someone a new look, relax them completely, and provide a place for people to escape. Plus, I make new friends every day. Who could ask for more?

In the end, although the spa business is magical, your business – or for that matter, your life – contains magic, too. The trick is to show up each day looking for it – simply noticing it in the everyday moments.

See you at the spa!

The Cover of Skin Deep Magazine!

It is so awesome to be a published author! You can read the digital edition if you’re interested: just click on the cover. This is my third time out, and my story is the lead article. 🙂 Since I no longer have employees (or children at home!), I’ve needed a teaching outlet, and writing fills the bill perfectly.

Since the article was published, I’ve gotten some great feedback, along with a request to teach at the Santa Barbara Aesthetics Academy.

Of course, I need to give credit where credit is due. My mom is a writer. She has yet to be published but has written several novels. She is brilliant. Trained as a lawyer and schooled in psychology as well, she was definitely my first mentor.

Next comes Jenn Prentice, whom you know.  She worked with me when I first began blogging, and she writes the hilarious and awesome blog, The Style Geek. She has guest-blogged for Star Brows and has written one of my most popular posts: Youngblood Mineral Mascara – The difference is eye-catching. This lady has inspired and influenced me more than she knows.

Then there’s my bestie, Jeanne Dininni. She is a copywriter, writes the blog Writer’s Notes,  and edits everything I write (so, if there are mistakes…just sayin’). 😉 I hate(d) grammar and punctuation. She tries to slip in teaching moments, which I rebel against regularly. After all, why should I learn when I have her – ha!

No thank-you list of mine would be complete without a shout-out to the Lord! He inspires, sustains, and teaches me new things daily: most importantly the lesson of Eucharisteo. And my daughter Valery’s  father-in-law, Larry Hoekman, who writes GodToMe, my daily devotional, inspires me as well.

All this to say, “Don’t let your gifts lie dormant. Take a chance, step out of your comfort zone, and live each day to the fullest, breath to breath.”  Cheers! Here’s to success for all of us in 2012.

See you at the spa!

Grand Opening!

In October and November I am celebrating the Grand Opening of the new home of Star Brows in Grover Beach! When I opened the original location November of 2007 in Arroyo Grande I had a big party. While fun, it was rather expensive, so this time I’m giving my customers a special offer instead of putting on the ritz.

I’ll be sending out a mailing to customers I haven’t seen in a while and interviewing current clients about their Star Brows experience. If you’d like to do a survey too, let me know and you’ll receive a special thank you gift!

Old friends, new, and prospective customers reading this blog post may all redeem the following offer:

$10 off The Ultimate Brow Experience, Massage, or a Facial, good through November 30 2011 when you mention this post, or bring in the coupon.

(Note: I will be on a Mediterranean Holiday October 18-November 3, so unavailable for appointments. My daughter Gina will be answering the phone, text messages, and will be able to fill product orders.)

About My Move

I started my search for commercial rentals in February and moved in April (what a whirl-wind). I found this amazing, light-filled space across from Miners on Grand Ave. It was bigger, closer to the beach, had a nice back parking lot, great exposure, and lots of potential.

The down-side was that the space lacked the amenities I needed: water, room walls and lighting. So we hired a general contractor, plumber, electrician, and carpenter.

We worked tirelessly for over a month, lived on take-out, skipped date night, and didn’t sleep much. Paul drove a staple into his finger with a staple gun, and now he has a permanent “trigger finger” … memories. I could never have done (afforded to do) this build-out if not for my dear husband, who is truly a jack-of-all-trades.

The contractors swallowed up the whole budget in a single gulp! (At least I put some people to work.) So, I shopped my ___ off at thrift stores all over for lighting, furniture and decor. Hospice Partners Hope Chest was my favorite, they are indeed “The Ultimate Thrift Store”. We tore out old walls and fixtures, painted every surface, cleaned, and did all sorts of re-purposing of things we already owned. We even painted furniture (thanks Behr 2-in-1).

In the end, it was all worth it. The results still amaze me after months of being in there.

Take a Tour

The “new” Star Brows is…

Convenient: I have two entrances but suggest parking in back. Grand Avenue is crazy. The restroom is back there too, just to the left of my door.

Sensual: Every sense says “spa”. When you walk in you may smell the amazing flowers delivered weekly by The Grand Bouquet or the essential oils I use is every treatment. The lighting is soft, and soy candles are always lit. Each room has its own sound system. In addition to zone heating and heated treatment tables, each space is softly lit with fixtures that are on dimmers.

Private: My services are “by appointment only,” and I allow 15 minutes between clients – so the place will likely be all yours.

Spacious: There are two private rooms and more:

The Facial Room has a heated table, body contour cushions, a hot towel warmer, sink, and a facial steamer.

The Massage Room was inspired by my love for Ethiopia (the country from which my first grandchild Bronson hails). Both treatment rooms are insulated for sound and each features gentle, radiant wall heat.

Body Waxing may be done in either room, which makes the service spa-like. Berodin® Blue – Hard Wax is used for face, underarms, bikini and Brazilian. Unlike the soft wax with strips used in most salons, it does not stick to the skin, which makes it less irritating.

The Lobby is open, and the makeup and Facial Waxing section is semi-private. My favorite and best-selling Makeup and Skincare products are proudly displayed for your browsing pleasure.

With 16 years as a spa owner, this is my proudest accomplishment. It blends elegant and exclusive with cozy and simple.

See you at the new spa!
